Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone.
Why do some teeth need to be extracted?
Teeth are sometimes removed because they are impacted. Teeth become impacted when they are prevented from growing into their normal position in the mouth by gum tissue, bone, or other teeth. Impaction is a common reason for the extraction of wisdom teeth.
Teeth may also require extraction because they are crowding other teeth in the mouth, are decayed or broken or to make more room in the mouth prior to straightening the remaining teeth (orthodontic treatment),
Extraction Description
Tooth extraction can be performed with local anesthesia if the tooth is exposed and appears to be easily removable in one piece.
Preparing for an Extraction
Before an extraction, Dr. Hargas will take the patient's medical history and dental history, to determine if previous extractions have been done and if the patient may have experienced any reactions to anesthetics. Dr. Hargas may prescribe antibiotics or recommend stopping certain medications prior to the extraction.
Post Extraction Care
An important aspect of aftercare is encouraging a clot to form at the extraction site. Putting pressure on the extraction area by biting gently on a wad of gauze for several hours after surgery should result in clotting. Once the clot is formed, it should not be disturbed. The patient should not rinse, spit, drink with a straw, or smoke for at least 24 hours after the extraction and preferably longer. Vigorous exercise should not be done for the first three to five days.
For the first two days after the procedure, the patient should drink liquids without using a straw, and eat soft foods. You should not chew on the side of the mouth where the extraction was done. The mouth can be gently cleaned with a toothbrush, trying to avoid scrubbing in the area of the extraction. .
Ice packs can be applied to reduce any facial swelling that may occur. Swelling is a normal part of the healing process. It is most noticeable in the first 48-72 hours. Dr. Hargas may prescribe medications to relieve postoperative pain if the patient requests them.
