Dental cleanings are a vital part of complete oral care. When you get your teeth examined and cleaned, you are taking steps to prevent significant health problems, such as heart disease, gum disease, stroke, and oral cancer.

Oral health problems are largely preventable. Unfortunately, they are still very common and affect many patients. Here are some key things to remember as you strive to take care of your smile:

Proper Hygiene: Proper daily oral hygiene habits–brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes and flossing once a day–are important for sustaining your mouth health. Be consistent with these habits using the proper equipment and techniques, and you’ll be off to a great start!

Eat Right: The foods you eat also have great impact on your oral (and overall) health. Making poor dietary choices can lead to cavities, as well as affect such conditions as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, obesity and various cancers.

Visit Your Dentist: In addition to impeccable home hygiene habits, it is important to visit the dentist at least every 6 months for dental cleanings and oral exams. These visits help identify any problems early, while they are still usually fairly simple and economical to repair.

During the visit, a few things can occur. We remove any tartar (hardened plaque) on the teeth and gums, to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. We also check for signs of cavities, advanced gum disease and gingivitis, oral cancer and any other oral health issues that may be present. Additionally, we often remove stains on teeth, which can be caused by coffee, red wine, tea, other highly pigmented foods and drinks or tobacco use.
